A few months ago, I attended a four day Fiber Art retreat taught by Deb Deaton of <a href="https://www.djsfiberarts.com/" target="_blank">DJs Fiber Arts.</a> </p><p>Her techniques include raw edge appliqué, free motion quilting, painting the background with transparent fabric paints, and other multi media techniques (use of roving, thread, pens, pastels, etc.). I loved going down this creative "rabbit hole" so much that I have now created three art quilts in less than two months. </p><p>The first, Saguaro, was completed mostly during the August retreat using Deb's pattern. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTiHYBSvrSrmFVpwuxSlSVO5F-D7vPFix_TYJy5NVBSblgnqS2Eht7m1g7fb4ehK8pUFBKsP6nx8gT7Q_CO4vTFaldQGaiDG6ajZwFgYRa388_faYNF9IOpgG8oUxbHjaw1HQVc6lbud4uf2kkmLfJeiV5hmpgkAjawC3t2mqC19jq8ukz41Y3e2kwCp8/s3511/20230831_154317.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3511" data-original-width="2562" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgTiHYBSvrSrmFVpwuxSlSVO5F-D7vPFix_TYJy5NVBSblgnqS2Eht7m1g7fb4ehK8pUFBKsP6nx8gT7Q_CO4vTFaldQGaiDG6ajZwFgYRa388_faYNF9IOpgG8oUxbHjaw1HQVc6lbud4uf2kkmLfJeiV5hmpgkAjawC3t2mqC19jq8ukz41Y3e2kwCp8/s320/20230831_154317.jpg" width="234" /></a></div><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">My next project involved using a free pattern from Maxine Tarsey. This one is called "Blue Tit" which is apparently a UK bird. Maxine has a Facebook group called <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/742174796826681" target="_blank">Fabric Collage Patterns</a>. She has a monthly subscription plan for her collage patterns. I've decided not to purchase it, even though it is very reasonably priced because I am more interested in creating new pieces from my original designs. Maxine's <a href="https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCESRhGV2cK_hR9ZHD47QChA" target="_blank">Youtube videos </a>do provide great step by step instructions for her design process as well as the creation of specific patterns. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Blue Tit was completed over two weeks in September and would have been done sooner but I had a four-day trip to Denver during that time. To say I was driven to complete it and see it finished is probably accurate. With this piece, I decided to use Lite Steam a Seam2 as my fusible as I had been a bit frustrated with the Misty fuse I used for the Saguaro piece. There are advantages and disadvantages of different fusible products and it is clear that different quilt artists have their favorites. I may be still trying to find mine. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhat0V4tj9i_at7Jfa6-Wtor5GNWRVeirr2CNwINqplG3fKX4CxsE08_DbEN7FF_ztxCcQjlqVc113kimdkoDzqzkHT7S6rJ-shjLBKkRtBWtBfkLkuRa_r3xUaaESZJ2u4zjLvRXiCMvzIJWjjNsdJVTz7Dv8pnXTih14HpOxmsXbGroFeYKMZ4iJvcT4/s4032/20230930_173917.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4032" data-original-width="3024" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhat0V4tj9i_at7Jfa6-Wtor5GNWRVeirr2CNwINqplG3fKX4CxsE08_DbEN7FF_ztxCcQjlqVc113kimdkoDzqzkHT7S6rJ-shjLBKkRtBWtBfkLkuRa_r3xUaaESZJ2u4zjLvRXiCMvzIJWjjNsdJVTz7Dv8pnXTih14HpOxmsXbGroFeYKMZ4iJvcT4/s320/20230930_173917.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">After getting some experience using prepared patterns, I was ready to try my hand at creating my own design. I have a previous neighbor who is an excellent amateur photographer known for his bird photos. I was excited when he granted me permission to use his photos for my collage art. I had a hard time deciding between a couple of photos, but settled on the Rufous Hummingbird.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I used Affinity Designer II app on my IPAD (free trial and relatively inexpensive program for IPAD) to trace a drawing of the bird. After saving it as a pdf file, I was able to use Adobe Reader on my Mac computer to print it poster sized (tiled). See screen shot below for settings I used. I trimmed and taped the pages together and had a full sized pattern to use for my collage. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUR9LZfQE_mbBLO78PL7NNoO7aWfUkemEbEC0vA6Ii1VkI8lrmAh0uE6YTifY4MVFhr3_yS49FXCsQ18Pfvg5xa-7YDabmhkOa7Rj3sethK5tzVBWMfuM_k4X8Ao75-TZM5-dyKj8ydzhQ3kckFuTGU3b1nDfRsq4mSjJbOF77QfuLw7Z332yfveMYxSM/s1850/Screenshot%202023-10-21%20at%202.48.38%20PM.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1504" data-original-width="1850" height="260" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUR9LZfQE_mbBLO78PL7NNoO7aWfUkemEbEC0vA6Ii1VkI8lrmAh0uE6YTifY4MVFhr3_yS49FXCsQ18Pfvg5xa-7YDabmhkOa7Rj3sethK5tzVBWMfuM_k4X8Ao75-TZM5-dyKj8ydzhQ3kckFuTGU3b1nDfRsq4mSjJbOF77QfuLw7Z332yfveMYxSM/s320/Screenshot%202023-10-21%20at%202.48.38%20PM.png" width="320" /></a></div><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Selecting fabrics for the collage was the next step using the photo as a guide. The wedding was nearly perfect. Here are some photos of the wedding craftiness I wanted to share. I was thrilled that my daughter got into the spirit and completed numerous projects including painting the centerpiece bottles, making signs and program fans, helping with the large flower pouffs, etc. I hope I've imparted to her some of my love of creating. Their gift to me was a beautiful engraved necklace that reads "You made our wedding beautiful"<br />

It would have been easy except for the fact that I made 28 of them! My daughter liked some table runners she saw on Etsy, however, they were $48 apiece. Needless to say, she turned to her crafty mother and I volunteered to make them. <br />
<br />
I didn't keep step by step photos, but these are the steps I followed to make the runners:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>cut fabric into 4 strips across and 3' to 5' in length (depending on table size)</li>
<li>sewed a narrow hem all around using my machine</li>
<li>Cut fusible hem tape (5/8") in half lengthwise (I couldn't find any that was thin enough)</li>
<li>Hemmed again by ironing and inserting fusible hem tape all around.(I did not want any stitching to show on the top side.)</li>
</ul>
<br />

Today, I made 36 of these paper flowers. Believe it or not, they are made from coffee filters. I used the instructions <a href="http://www.michellamarie.com/2011/07/white-paper-peonies-tutorial.html" target="_blank">here</a> but with these modifications/shortcuts:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_oBpIC1uBQo/UQxSoxcBAEI/AAAAAAAAJFU/EYVZs8Iq7Q8/s1600/IMG_8960-001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_oBpIC1uBQo/UQxSoxcBAEI/AAAAAAAAJFU/EYVZs8Iq7Q8/s320/IMG_8960-001.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<ul>
<li>I folded 3 coffee filters at a time; after folding 4 times, I cut both corners off which avoided having to do other cutting later. </li>
<li>I used a hot glue gun to glue the floral wire to the first filter.</li>
<li>I used duct tape to secure the filters after the 5th and 10th filter, then I used floral tape to wrap over the duct tape (seemed stronger). </li>
<li>A package of 200 filters in each size (4-6 cup and 8-12 cup) will make 40 flowers. </li>
<li>You will need: coffee filters, floral wire, floral tape, duct tape, hot glue gun and glue, scissors</li>
</ul>

In that time, I retired from my day job. Incredible as it seems to me, I feel that I have even less time now that I am not working.<br /><br />So what has filled me time? A new commitment to exercise has taken me to the gym about 3x a week. I started reading again, and knitting more.<br /><br />I'll try to post some of my retirement creations in the next weeks. First on my list is the only new design I've finished since retirement.<br /><br />I call these January Mitts and they were made to go with my best-selling Cabled neck warmer. I knit quite a few pair getting the pattern just right. It's a little credit/debit card reader that works with an Android phone (or an IPAD) and plugs into the headphone jack. I've resisted taking credit cards at shows in the past due to the costs associated with most options (Propay and others). This seems perfect for me...no charges at all unless I make a sale and then it is 2.75% of the cost of the sale (slightly more if no card is present as in if you make a phone or internet sale).Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-366724323258645916.post-71125085250765375792011-04-11T10:54:00.000-06:002011-04-11T10:55:25.440-06:00My neckwarmer is featured<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/hmoriginals/5610577850/" title="alpaca treasury by HMOriginals, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5021/5610577850_2fb295b221_z.jpg" alt="alpaca treasury" width="634" height="640" /></a>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-366724323258645916.post-31333660060039119202011-04-11T10:29:00.003-06:002011-04-11T10:40:44.522-06:00April's Featured Blogger<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YWCz0D6akwM/TaMuPwOdi0I/AAAAAAAAFbE/I2bR9Zb9gwM/s1600/il_570xN.234802826.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 382px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YWCz0D6akwM/TaMuPwOdi0I/AAAAAAAAFbE/I2bR9Zb9gwM/s400/il_570xN.234802826.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5594366010302761794" border="0" /></a><br />is.....<a href="http://linorstorecom.blogspot.com/"><span style="font-size:85%;"><b><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">lindab</span>142</b></span></a><br /><br />Linda is a member of the <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">Etsy</span> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">Bloggers</span> who designs "handmade beaded wire <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">kippot</span>, beaded and wire wrapped gemstone and glass <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">judaica</span> and secular jewelry, magnets, beaded bookmarks and accessories for purses, zippers and other fashion accessories."<br /><br />Her <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">Etsy</span> shop is <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/lindab142#">here</a>. the bracelet shown above has different types of yellow glass, acrylic, glass and yellow jasper gemstone beads<br />Her blog is <a href="http://linorstorecom.blogspot.com/">here</a>. I've been a slacker of late.<br /><br />This week's topic:<br />The first Public Library (in the US) opened on April 9<span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">th</span>, 1833 in New Hampshire<br /><span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">Peterborough</span> is the town where the first library opened. What's your town known for? Show us around!<br /><br />My town, <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4">Pocatello</span>, Idaho, is known as the "Smile capital". Here's the information on how this came to be from the City's home page:<br /><blockquote></blockquote></span><blockquote>In 1948, the Mayor of the City of <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5">Pocatello</span>, George Phillips, passed an ordinance making it illegal not to smile in <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6">Pocatello</span>. The "Smile Ordinance" was passed tongue in cheek as a result of an exceptionally severe winter, which had dampened the spirit of city employees and citizens alike. <p align="left"><br /> The ordinance unintentionally remained on the books and was discovered by staff and later by a local reporter who wrote an article appearing in 1987 in the <em>Idaho State Journal</em>. The American Bankers Association chose our outdated ordinance to use in their national advertising campaign, emphasizing the theme of outdated laws to convince the United States Congress to modernize banking laws. </p> <p align="left"><br /> On December 10, 1987, in response to an invitation from <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7">Pocatello's</span> Mayor, representatives from the American Bankers Association visited <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8">Pocatello</span> and declared our community the “U.S. Smile Capital.” </p> <p align="left"><br /> <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9">Pocatello</span> received a great deal of national and international media attention for the “Smile Ordinance,” and in the spirit of fun, the event was perpetuated by making “Smile Days” an annual event. </p> <p align="left"><br /> Traditionally, our status as the U.S. Smile Capital is celebrated with a poster contest for elementary school children; a smile contest; “arrests” of those who do not smile; and a community celebration at the end of the week. </p> <p align="left"><br /> Join the fun and help us celebrate the universal language of a smile! </p> <p align="left"><br /> Keep Smiling!</p></blockquote><p align="left"></p> <p align="left"> </p><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Note: This post was written as part of a <a href="http://etsybloggers.blogspot.com/2011/04/its-carnival-time-april-11th.html">blog carnival by my EtsyBloggers Team</a><a href="http://etsybloggers.blogspot.com/2011/04/its-carnival-time-april-11th.html">.</a> If you're a lover of books and libraries, you might want to read how Etsy shop owners are influenced by Public Libraries while others give you a glimpse into their home towns, like this post. </span><br /><span style="font-size:85%;"><br /></span>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com8tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-366724323258645916.post-45061200540526869022011-04-09T10:05:00.004-06:002011-04-09T10:39:03.556-06:00In Memoriam<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hJ6w_KSL6c0/TaCLn19e02I/AAAAAAAAFZg/71m0ePhJvr4/s1600/cropped%2Bcat.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 291px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hJ6w_KSL6c0/TaCLn19e02I/AAAAAAAAFZg/71m0ePhJvr4/s400/cropped%2Bcat.JPG" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5593624253810266978" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5QE5dfNtpjw/TaCKaylGTUI/AAAAAAAAFZM/FHH3-NqoHF0/s1600/Snickers%2BClose%2BUp.jpg"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-5QE5dfNtpjw/TaCKaylGTUI/AAAAAAAAFZM/FHH3-NqoHF0/s400/Snickers%2BClose%2BUp.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5593622930052762946" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xJViDOhwfBI/TaCFLH5SVAI/AAAAAAAAFZA/RW6GPWdgE08/s1600/167%2BE100%2BE%2B%2B%2B%2B%2B%2B%2B038.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 250px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xJViDOhwfBI/TaCFLH5SVAI/AAAAAAAAFZA/RW6GPWdgE08/s400/167%2BE100%2BE%2B%2B%2B%2B%2B%2B%2B038.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5593617163338535938" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Farewell to my special kitty, Snickers, who was with me for about nine years. She was the only cat I've known who would do "rollovers" on command. In the summer, she liked to sleep in the sink. She liked to cuddle on the couch when we watched tv. She had a unique personality and I will miss her.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com5
